Associate Scientist – Ames Laboratory, Iowa State University. This position will conceive, discover, synthesize, and broadly characterize new metal-rich, solid-state materials of broad character. The incumbent will collaborate with the supervisor, other group members plus those in the group of G. J. Miller in the same Field Work Proposal (FWP), and other PI's in the Division of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE); design, perform and supervise synthesis, crystallography, other experimental and theoretical investigations; interprets the results; propose new directions in intermetallic investigations and write research proposals for future funding of research projects. The incumbent will head and supervise all FWP activities and compliance concerned with health and safety. Required qualifications: MS degree plus 5 years experience OR Ph.D. and 2 years of experience. Degree must be in Chemistry or related field. Experience must include synthesis of air sensitive materials in high temperature systems, single crystal X-ray diffraction and structure solutions, and theoretical calculations and interpretations. Demonstrated knowledge of or experience with phase diagram and principles and solid state chemistry. Preferred qualifications: Ph.D. in chemistry; Experience in single crystal X-ray diffraction, including state-of-the-art solutions of complex solid state structures; Experience with electronic structure software for characterizing electronic structure and chemical bonding in solids and molecules; Research experience with scientific problems involved in solid-state chemistry; and Publication record involving syntheses and structures of metal-rich solids and electronic structure of solids.
